Did you know that there are high school juniors and seniors working at LA Opera?

These high schoolers, along with a handful of college students, are interns taking part in LA Opera's Leadership Academy, and it’s definitely not your ordinary internship. Established in 2016, the Leadership Academy is an innovative program designed to cultivate a new generation of diverse arts leaders through paid work experience, mentorship, and arts administration courses.

Committed interns are invited back year after year, including through their college years if they go to school locally, or over the summer if they head elsewhere for school. By the time these interns graduate college, they could have as much as six years of work experience of such depth and breadth in all aspects of arts management, that any arts organization—any company for that matter—would be lucky to hire them.

Things to know:

  • LA Opera chooses two rising juniors each year with a passion for learning about the arts.
  • Throughout the season, interns rotate through different departments, learning the intricate ins and outs of a major opera company and experiencing a whole range of potential careers in the arts.
  • Each paid internship can last up to six years.
