The Los Angeles Opera will hold auditions in February and March 2023 for experienced, classically trained singers seeking a professional contract in the highly acclaimed LA Opera Chorus for the 2023/24 season.  

Those who apply to audition will be informed of the 2023/24 mainstage production titles and schedules by February 23, 2023, and will be considered for all mainstage productions for which they express interest. LA Opera is committed to cultivating diversity in its workplace and is continuously seeking to recruit individuals who help us reflect the entire community of Los Angeles. The 2023/24 season will include an opera which focuses on Black life in the U.S. during the civil rights era, as well as operas set in Asian and Latinx communities. LA Opera encourages singers of all races, ethnicities, and other identities to audition.

Through their resume and in their audition, applicants should demonstrate:  

  • A minimum of 4 years classical voice training 

  • Excellent sight-reading ability in music and languages

  • Ability to memorize music quickly

  • Experience in another professional opera or symphony chorus and/or strong academic or other equivalent experience

  • Stage experience and/or significant stage training  

Applicants will be asked to confirm availability for all rehearsals and performances prior to their audition. Additionally, applicants will be asked about their ability to perform the physical requirements of each production (e.g. working on a raked stage, kneeling, etc.)

Applicants who do not receive an appointment will be invited to an Open Call audition on March 11, 2023.

Please note the following while preparing for the audition: 

  • Applicants should prepare 2 or 3 operatic arias contrasting in style and language. 

  • One of the three selections may be an art song or a composition from another genre. 

  •  The audition panel may ask to hear only one aria.  

  •  Arias should be sung in the original key and language.    

  •  Applicants may be asked to sight read an aria in the audition. 

  •  Auditions typically last no longer than 6 minutes; please plan your repertoire accordingly.

All applicants must be local, L.A. based. Travel and housing cannot be compensated.

More information will be supplied closer to the audition. Individuals who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 due to a medical reason or sincerely held religious belief should reach out to LA Opera’s Human Resources department (HR@laopera.org) as soon as possible to discuss the process for requesting an exemption from the policy. LA Opera will engage in an interactive process with individuals making such requests, according to applicable law. If it is decided that granting an exemption would pose a threat to health and safety in the workplace that cannot be sufficiently mitigated through reasonable accommodation, the request will be denied.
